Since moving back to the Southwest of England after living in Australia, my work evolved to reflect the rugged, ever-changing landscape of Cornwall.
Inspired by the mineral-rich earth, I create large hand-built, ceramic vessels. Sculptural in form, a playful balance of shapes reminiscent of those formed by the erosion of the ocean. Each barrel-fired with locally foraged seaweed and driftwood, the clay grogged with sand from nearby coves and finished with copper - a nod to Cornwalls industrial mining heritage.
Through the traditional firing process, the foraged items come full circle, embedding a colour palette and finish that reflects their own small piece of history within the landscape.
After studying at Somerset College of Arts and Technology, I spent 15 years working as a Brand Designer before retraining in Ceramics at Sydney TAFE. Every element of my work tells a story. From the stacked forms of my pieces and the materials I use, to the name TUCANA itself - one of the brightest globular clusters in the sky, inspired by the many nights spent feeding the barrel in the darkness. I am a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, and recently won an award for Outstanding Innovation in Craft and Design.
