The Master of Plasticine and The King of Clay
Date: 29 April 2022
Dear Craft Festival Friend,
I hope this finds you well and another Bank Holiday is already upon us! I'm heading back home to Cardigan for Barley Saturday (I'll tell you more of that another time) Are you doing anything nice?
Over Lockdown, I became friends with the unbelievably talented, Master of Plasticine & Aardman Ambassador, Jim Parkyn. Earlier this year, he joined us at our Craft Festival in Cheltenham and I am so excited that The Master of Plasticine will be bringing his Amazing Scene Machine to Bovey Tracey in June.
We had to ask Jim to choose his 5 Favourites, read on to find out, they're great!
Last year I managed to chat with Jim in between Lockdowns on The Capital of Craft. You can listen to our podcast HERE.

The Letterpress Collective
1st off I have chosen The Letterpress Collective.
I have a great love of print and play with it myself, but Nick Hand and his amazing team take things to another level.
The precision and care taken in all they do is astonishing and a visit to the workshop is to take a deep dive in to a treasure trove of type and machinery. Their mobile printing experience is bound to catch anyone's imagination and you can take home a piece of print with real pride. Plus, it's always nice to see a local face.
Sue Pryke
Although ceramic clay doesn't act in the same fashion as modelling clay I am really drawn to its possibilities.
I enjoy the fluidity of movement in sculpture and practical ware alike.
Sue Pryke produces elegant and light forms that are a delight. I aspire to the clean lines and colours of what she produces and am rather taken with her combination of porcelain and concrete pieces.
Zoe Stainton
Being a model maker means I work in many different mediums and am constantly adopting new skills to fit the projects that i am working on.
I have some experience of working with wool and the felting process so my appreciation for the work of Zoe Stainton is even greater.
Zoe’s ability to capture personality and potential energy makes her Hare forms almost leap into life while you stand looking at them.
Esther Smith
I love storytelling and sculpture and Esther Smiths work covers both things. Her automata pieces combine all the intricacy and attention to detail that I love in animation in a single object.
Holy Smoke
I love dogs and it has only taken 45 years to finally have one of my own.
I love my dog dearly but I would very much like to own one of the soulful hounds made by Holy Smoke.
The understanding of form and in many cases removal of form show a real understanding of anatomy and personality.
Texture and tone combine in rather emotionally charged pieces that capture a moment in time and the choice of base or bases have such poise.
KEITH!
Due to unprecedented demand, I've booked a bigger tent for Keith! So if you missed out, this is your chance to grab a seat for an Audience with Keith Brymer -Jones.
I'll be chatting with Keith and he'll be giving a throwing masterclass at 11am and 3pm on Friday June 17th.
