Sophie Elm is a printmaker, illustrator and designer. She creates illustrative linocuts, as well as hand block printed textiles.
Her work contains horticultural and botanical themes as well as snippets of domesticity, all inspired by the seasonal changes in the home, garden and countryside around her. Pastoral traditions and celebrations are of great interest too. The idea of shining a light and beautifying the mundane is something which excites her, likely stemming from her love of 20th century packaging and advertising, where the most mundane of products could be found in a highly adorned package. The combination of illustrative elements and typography can often be found throughout Sophie’s work as well as the use of bold colours and pattern.
Although her work is predominately hand burnished linocuts, she likes to experiment with other forms of printmaking too, such as screen print and letterpress, as well as exploring paper cut, collage and hand drawn imagery, sometimes combing processes to produce her final images. She is also developing a range of block printed textiles.
Sophie studied Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and now works from her home studio in the Stroud Valleys, Gloucestershire.
Her prints and textiles are sold through her own website, as well as a selection of galleries and independent shops across the UK. Sophie enjoys working with others and takes on commissions, both private and commercial.
Her work has been featured in Period Living, Country Living, Modern Gardens and Frankie Magazine.
