Rachel O'Connell
Marbling Artist, Leatherworker and Educator
South Devon, England
Inspired by nature and architecture, using heritage craft skills with a contemporary design aesthetic to create functional, textile art for the home and to wear.
I am multi-media marbling artist and an educator, with over 30 years of marbling and textiles experience. I trained as a leatherworker for upholstery projects and began marbling on leather 15 years ago. I marble on textiles, including leather, on paper and wood, to create textile art for home décor, stationery and wearable art.
I make to order, shipping 3-4 weeks from order. I also offer one off and limited small batch items in my ready to ship range a few times a year, shipped within 7 days from order. As a sustainable artist I work with organisations to repurpose their waste materials. I have a circular design range of jewellery and accessories, created from repurposing ballet slipper leather, donated by The Royal Ballet and Opera, London. Proceeds from sales go to support the incredible work of the food bank charity, Trussell UK.
After 30 years of marbling as a joyful hobby, I turned professional, launching my sustainable brand, ROCWORX in 2021. I have since exhibited and sold work in Brantwood Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, The British Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, and at London Craft Week, Handmade Oxford, MAKE Southwest, New Brewery Arts and Thelma Hulbert Art Gallery. My work can be found in select galleries and independent shops here in Devon and in London.
I am also a member of Heritage Crafts, as marbling is an endangered heritage craft, Blue Patch, a sustainable B2B charity, who connect artists with organisations for creative projects, and an Associate member at MAKE Southwest and part of Green Makers Initiative.
I tutor marbling and leatherwork in schools, community groups, galleries and museums. I am a tutor for the National Trust, Heritage Skills Centre, West Dean Art College, Art's Council National Saturday Club at MAKE Southwest and for the educational charity, The Creative Dimension Trust. I also demonstrate in museums and for Heritage Crafts and Craft Festival.
I run small classes in my own Studio in Devon, teaching marbling, bookbinding, soft furnishings and leatherwork.
