Nettle Revolution is a contemporary textile practice founded by Jane Gray, specialising in handwoven mixed media textiles using stinging nettle fibre. Her work combines traditional weaving techniques with natural, foraged and reclaimed materials, including linen and wool, creating pieces that are both tactile and environmentally conscious.
Working from Cornwall, Jane draws on the surrounding landscape and seasonal rhythms to inform her practice. Each piece reflects a considered approach to material, process and sustainability, with nettle fibre at its core. Once widely used, nettle is reintroduced here as a viable and relevant material for contemporary textiles.
Her mixed media approach incorporates hand-processed fibres and subtle variations in texture and structure, resulting in quietly distinctive works that explore resilience, resourcefulness and renewal.
Alongside her studio practice, Jane leads workshops that share knowledge of foraging, fibre preparation and mindful making, encouraging a deeper connection to natural materials.
Nettle Revolution positions nettle as both a sustainable fibre and a material of cultural significance, offering a thoughtful contribution to contemporary craft through process-led, environmentally aware textile work.
I am Jane Gray, a creative maker, fibre forager, and textile designer based in Cornwall, known as The Nettle Lady. My work is rooted in a deep connection to the natural landscape, where I gather and transform plants, particularly stinging nettles, into both fibre and healing creations.
Through my practice, I explore the powerful relationship between nature, wellbeing, and traditional craft. Nettles, often much maligned, have become both my material and my message. I handcraft textiles, including woven scarves made from nettle fibre and linen, alongside natural wellness products such as infusions and balms.
My work is as much about education as it is about making. I share knowledge through workshops, storytelling, and hands-on experiences, encouraging others to reconnect with the land, rediscover overlooked plants, and embrace slower, more mindful ways of living.
Each piece I create carries a story of resilience, sustainability, and renewal, inspired by the rugged Cornish coastline and the quiet wisdom of the plants that grow there.
