Melissa Montague is a metalsmith whose practice explores traditional silversmithing techniques such as hammer raising and forging. Predominantly working with silver, copper and brass Melissa creates vessel forms and spoons, which question the boundaries between function and sculpture. Hammer marks and oxidization are used to create different surface textures and visual interest. Often complementing the metal objects with contrasting materials such as wood in the form of a plinth or base, a conscious notion to encourage the user to have these objects on display. Within her work Melissa explores the relationship between people and artifacts to establish a lasting connection through function, scale and intrigue.
