I make ceramics which are both decorative and functional: beautiful to look at and a pleasure to use. My vases, jugs and bowls are thrown on the wheel from white earthenware clay, and are partly inspired by the still-life paintings of Giorgio Morandi: I enjoy placing my work in harmonious groups, where the colour and form of each vessel is in balance with its companions. I studied Ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts, graduating in 1996, and during my degree course I formulated a smooth, semi-matt glaze, to which I add oxides and stains to obtain a wide range of colours inspired by the natural world, sometimes muted and subtle and sometimes bright and vivid.
I work from my garden studio in Farnham, Surrey, having moved from London in 2000. I taught pottery to children and adults for 10 years, delivering classes and workshops at schools, adult education centres and museums across Surrey and Hampshire; I no longer teach but enjoy being part of the creative community that exists in and around Farnham: I take part in Open Studios and many other local events. My work is represented at many Galleries throughout the UK, and I also sell via online platforms and from my own website, and am lucky to have collectors of my work in many countries across the world. I welcome commissions and enjoy discussing with a client their specific needs: perhaps a group of vessels to sit as a sculptural group alongside a favourite painting, or a special gift. I'm constantly refining my vessels and exploring new forms and colour combinations; I like looking back through my sketchbooks for ideas as yet unexplored, and I'm always inspired by the colours in the landscape; as Morandi said, "what interests me most is expressing what is in nature, in the visible world".
