Louisa makes a range of functional tableware and decorative pieces in hand-blown lead crystal which she hopes will bring joy to people every day. Glassware to enjoy using and seeing around the home. She feels there’s something intrinsically pleasing about holding an object which carries within it a spirit of authenticity, individuality and craftsmanship.
Her collection features simple shapes in a sophisticated colour palette. Each piece is free-blown and has individual character, no two pieces are ever the same.
Echoing the design sensibility of Mid-Century Scandinavian glass, the timeless shape of her Fluidity Carafe is the centrepiece of her truly unique tableware range. It is gently squeezed in by hand whilst the glass is semi-molten, this hand-formed impression of the maker’s touch, turns the spherical body into an ergonomic shape which has a direct relationship to the human hand.
The name of this elegant carafe is derived from the graceful and fluid nature of the molten lead crystal glass as the bubble gently falls and stretches into the tapering silhouette with heat and gravity. Capturing a moment in time when liquid becomes solid, the smooth lines of her signature carafe show off the beauty and quality of the material. She also makes a range of drinking glasses, gift sets and vases.
Louisa returned to glass-blowing three years ago, after more than 20 years away, she says “It’s a very instant and challenging medium, the process is quite fast and you need to think on your feet. I like the vague danger and excitement of it all, it’s quite a performance. I love the fact that the tools and techniques haven’t changed for thousands of years. You only have a combination of heat, gravity, centrifugal force and hand tools to create a piece.”
She graduated with an M.A. from the Royal College of Art in 1997, prior to that she trained at the renowned International Glass Centre, Brierley Hill, Manchester Metropolitan University and Leicester Polytechnic.
She sells through her website, as well as galleries and selected craft fairs.
