Button-making is the perfect vehicle for expressing my love of detail. My button designs are inspired by a love of nature and storytelling. I rejoice in making miniature pieces of affordable art. Sewn onto people’s own garments, Bodkin Beak’s fabric covered buttons go out into the world to become part of new personal life stories. The Carded Button collections are ready-to-sew, or make ready-to-frame affordable pieces of art. The Brooch Badges are wearable, collectable miniatures. The designs for my Buttons, brooch badges and the scroll ‘pages’ of my Button Spool Books are based on my photographs, which are digitally printed onto sustainably produced cotton and calico.The Button Spool Books (made using old wooden cotton spools and featuring my buttons) are collectable objects, but also intriguing reads, finding their stories and poetry in everyday overlooked wonders. Inspired by the humble button that literally holds things together, I view them as evocative touchstones and can’t help using them to button words together.
