Alexei Sawyer | Sculptural Turned Vessels | Gloucestershire

Alexei Sawyer is a self-taught woodturner based in Gloucestershire who creates one-off sculptural vessels and bowls, each shaped in direct response to the individual piece of wood. Working with locally sourced hardwoods — many salvaged from storm damage, disease or responsible woodland management, including wood from Westonbirt Arboretum — he seeks to honour the life of each tree through considered, unhurried form.

His practice centres on the once-turned method, allowing pieces to move and respond naturally as they dry, often to walls as fine as 2–3mm. Rather than correcting the irregularities of the material, Alexei embraces knots, cracks, spalting and natural warping as evidence of the wood's own history. This approach reflects a deep affinity with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence and authenticity.

Every piece is finished using natural, plant-based oils that protect the wood while preserving its warmth and tactility. A member of Make Southwest, Alexei exhibits in galleries and sells directly, drawing on a background in green woodworking, chair making and a lifelong practice in visual design.
